Every time I find myself at Atlanta’s airport I pass a vending machine that sells the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Without fail, I tell myself, “You knew it was going to be there, you should have brought two dollars in change”. Seriously though, why should I have to do that?

If these newspapers are going to stand a chance against online media, the least they could do is install some digital method of paying, or even a dollar bill taker.

I can only assume that outfitting these machines so people could pay with their mobile phones and what-not would just cost too much. What’s the alternative? There must be millions of them out there.

I think in 2013 there’s going to be a thriving business modifying these machines into fish tanks or something else clever. There intended use is becoming ludicrous.

    Sad but true.

    Actually, there are cashless systems to convert vending machines, laundromat washers/dryers, etc, (such as USATech.com, VeriFone.com) but there are kinks to be worked out and the adoption rate is slow.

    It’s a good thing for them that scrap metal prices have skyrocketed.

    I think they are NOT doing it, because with digital machines, they have to pay electric bill associated with that.

    If they only sell 10 papers a day from that digital machine it has to be LEFT turned on all day, so electric bill would be preety high, so preety much they MIGHT end up Loosing more than they are with this machine.

    Soon they will go out of business.

    The same goes with parking meters. I am lucky that I can pay by phone in my area, but when I venture out of my neck of the woods I always risk a ticket. Or trying to find a pay phone these days is ridiculous as well. Everything has moved digital and although it seems nice and convenient, I do kind of miss the speed and ease of use (universal acceptance) cash gives.
