One Challenge Accepted. Domains.com

It's hard to imagine a name that could fit our industry better than Domains.com. I'm sure we've all reached out to the current owners at least once inquiring about it.

Today, I'm proud to announce that I've just secured the brokerage agreement on our own category killer, domains.com.  This is in response to my challenge post put up just before the big holiday.

This will not be a cheap name and the business does not come with it. I will be putting together marketing materials and personally attempting to sell this name for all of us to see.

If you or your company has an interest in it the best you can do at this time is submit me a proposal. You should know that the seller is willing to finance, accept equity proposals or talk specifically cash. All proposals will be taken seriously.

We won't be in a hurry to sell this name but we do want to cut a deal in the first half of 2010 if we can find the right buyer.

It's ranked in second position on Google for the keyword "domains". This is not an easy keyword to get.

Please only submit your interest level if you are sizable enough to get within reach. While I can't say any numbers at this time, I think you know what I mean by that.

I think I speak for all of us: Well done.

    What an amazing name. WOW.

Best of luck with it and keep us posted.

Very excited for you that you have the opportunity to
    broker this gem.

Congrats Rick.. your strategy paid off.

Now good luck with the sale!

  • http://brucemarler.com Bruce Marler

Good luck Rick. Wow, looking forward to seeing where this goes.

  • http://www.successclick.com Stephen Douglas

    Wow Rick!

That domain will DEFINITELY be a "challenge" for you. Good job! Off the top of my head, I can say that "domains.com" means almost nothing, and the "challenge" for you is to make it "mean something." Good luck! It seems like a huge endeavor for your team to pull off.

  • http://badexample.com bad domain to choose

Rick, you picked the same industry the conference is for. It makes it easier and I can see why you would pick that one. But it ruins the challenge. If you really wanted to make a play for the publicity, choose a top tier domain name from a different vertical. Domains.com may sell, but to whom? A domain registrar? So what. Sell home.com to Remax. Now that is something to toot about.

  • http://www.new.us .us domains

I think this might be an easy sell with a room full of deep pocket domainers :)

    I think $650,000 is a good guide ?

No challenge here, i bet half your attendes have tried to buy this name before :)

  • http://www.alreadyinspired.com Muzi Mohale | AlreadyInspired.com

I'm not clear with this statement 'and the business does not come with it' does that mean the present content will be excluded from the transaction?

If so, does it mean I can put my domain name on sale and transfer the current content to another of my domains and make money on only the domain, while I build a new domain using content from a sold domain? I find this quite interesting indeed...

  • http://www.saxonmath.com Saxon Math

It would be nice to know what the best offer for this domain was in the past, to be able to compare that with the amount you'r going to sell it for

  • Joe

This would be a good name for you Rick.

  • https://www.donsubasta.com DonSubasta

damn , thats the name where its all about: -)

    good luck rick

  • http://www.MO.com Brian Null

now that's a category killer we can all get excited about... love it.

  • Rick Latona

Muzi, that is correct. The website is not included.

  • http://sigmaNames.com Open Domain Market

Now, that is a challenge and the domainers world is watching you Rick.

    Good Luck!

  • http://bizdomains.com Michael Bilde

    Every domainer's wet dream...

It would be interesting to know what price range buyer is expecting, though. Would $100,000 receive a reply?

  • http://www.europeandomaincentre.com Christopher Hofman

It made my mouth water. That is The killer domain in my Industry.

  • http://HomeRefinance.com Bob

So nice to see such a plump apple fall out of the tree - I wonder how many previous farmers just didn't shake hard enough?! Just goes to show that there's STILL big deals to be made out there! Best of luck in this sale Rick!

  • http://www.genericcctlds.com Bruce

I am confused, I thought you were looking for a challenge? Domains.com is a gimme

  • http://www.saveology.com-www.SupportSquad.com Jeremy Brooks

Rick: I had a meeting with my team of sales guys this morning and one of them barked out to me: "if your such a pro, what makes you so damn good"....

A dollar for donuts says you cant recall what you told me long ago, which was my response....?

What is it that defines a professional salesman?

  • http://www.telplatform.com Dennis

Hey, this domain was mine ! I registered it in 1985 and sold it for 5 bucks then !

Just kidding, I hope you will make a great shot Rick !

    Dennis

  • Jon

I agree with those who don't see that a real challenge as most domains-related companies already want this domain, so it's just the matter of working out the price. The challenge would be to sell a monster name like travel.com or home.com to a large end-user who is not on the market to buy domains at large end-user prices.

  • Rick Latona

@jeremy, I've had a lot of one-liners in my life. Honestly, I can't remember this one!

  • Rick Latona

    Pizzazz?

  • Ken

I do wish you the best of luck and fortune with this name, Rick. It is truly a winner and as a category killer has a head start on your goal.

Although had I known that you set your sights so low on this so-called "challenge", I would not have bothered submitting my names. May you set your sights higher on your next "challenge".

At any rate, a Happy New Year's to you and yours, Rick.

  • Victor

That is not a challenge! Domains.com can be sold fast. Sell a domain like houses.fm, BarBQ.net, MensCologne.de, GolfGear.de, or VendingMachines.de.

    Make it a real challenge.

  • http://www.jrjackson.com J.R. Jackson

    Fantastic name. Congratulations.

    J.R.

  • Louise

Sounds like a nice challenge. Everything's a challenge in this economy!

  • http://www.dnpimping.com Jason

Make it happen Rick! This will be a great learning experience for those who are watching.

  • http://parkeddomainseller.com tony morrison

wheres the challange ? even i could sell that one ! take a deadbeat reg fee domain and sell that for $50 or $100 now thats a challange !

  • http://geoowners.com Tim Davids

LOL...all you guys saying this is no challenge prolly passed on the chance yourselves since it was a slam dunk.

    That's OK Rick...you gotta start somewhere :)

  • Victor

I agree with Ken. Many people sent in their domain names and he(Rick) chose a very generic domain that would be easy to sell. This was suppose to be a CHALLENGE, not a joy ride. Like I was saying, sell houses.fm, BarBQ.net, VendingMachines.de, GolfGear.de.........that's a CHALLENGE.

  • http://premiumdomains.us M. Menius

I hope it goes for $2 million+ and gets announced on the evening news. Anything to shine a positive light on the domain industry.

  • Rick Latona

Guys, if you knew how big the price tag was you'd know how much of a challenge it is. The name is worth it though. I've just got to convince the buyer.

  • http://CustomerService.com Walter

Rick, now that I've contracted with you to sell CustomerService.com at the Las Vegas auction, I hope you put that into your "selling challenge" category.

  • http://www.n49.com Rick Silver

The domain ranks exceptionally well and so even if the content is not included...the link popularity and history of the site should give the new owner a huge head start.

  • Alex A.

This name is very hard sell. Good luck Rick. Probably asking for 10 million plus... not enough search traffic for the plural either.

Speaking of, domain.com is where all the money is. Over a 10/1 difference in Estibot valuation between singular and plural.

Curious to see the feedback on this one over time. - Alex A.

  • Victor

When your done with that sale, sell one of these:

    Houses.fm

    VendingMachines.de

    WomensPerfume.de

    hummer.net

    YAVL.com

  • http://blog.dnsugar.com/ Rick

Oh, that's incredible! Can't imagine owning domain name like that... Must go for $3 million and more. Congrats!

  • http://www.dnfit.com Oskars

I think it's a good name to choose Rick.
And LOL at everyone who thinks it's a greater challange to sell a regfee name for $100 than it is to sell Domains.com...
Sure anyone could sell domains.com for $50 000, but to sell it for what it's max value is, not so easy...
