I guess TRAFFIC is not an event for people with 'an interest in domains' but more for people for whom domaining is a serious part of what they do. Maybe though, as you suggest there's room for a more informal, low key & vastly cheaper get together. Some of the guys at DNTrade are keen for something like that too Yeah but the big difference is that most people attending a car show are not making a business out of it or even making any money out of cars.
