We’ve done one more thing to change the way domain auctions should be run. Our main competitor throws names that don’t sell into an online bidding system and runs them for another week. We are starting the online bidding a week before the live auction. You can sign up now and start bidding! The auctions will close when the live auctioneer says “sold” on the 24th at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Domain Conference and Expo.

My anxiety level is at an all-time high but at this point, I need to let the market determine our fate. I’ve done everything that we could think of. We’ve got, what we feel, is an incredibly good list of names at low reserves. We’ve got a world champion auctioneer. We are using the best online auction software company. We are starting the auction a week early! And, we have better financing options than our competitors because we will pay 10% of your down payment. I don’t know what else to do at this point other than sit back and hope for the best.

We are here to stay which is why we’ve put so much into this. Anything worth having is worth fighting for and the domain buyer, my customer, is why I fight.

    Great idea Rick!

    Starting the online auction before the live auction will give investors an indication of the interest level for the domain. MUCH better than that "other" way.

    A lot of names of your auction inventory are appealing. Congrats!
    But what look likes is missing are the domain reserves.
    The lack of transparency should refrain a lot of potential buyers, caution Rick.
    Domain investors really need to evaluate in advance the names to bid and reserves are critical points.

    DomainTools also offered the possibility to bid before the live auction day in his previous auctions.
    At this time I wanted to help Jay and a pair of auctions I bidded several expensive names to try to create some sort of emulation.
    But without success, except mine, all the bids were done the day of the live auction.
    I hope you will be more lucky than Jay on this.

    Which is a better investment at this point in time(September 2008)?

    Buying a domain name or buying a house???

    You will most likely end up paying $100k for a domain name that is worth only $50k at these auctions.

    On the other hand, you can buy a $500k house for only $100k today.

    I just closed on a million dollar lake house for only $300k.

    Which is a better investment at this point in time...buying a house or buying a domain name???

    What do you guys think???

    Buy a powerful domain name, build the site for a year and the profit you generate every single year will pay for your lake house, your car and your dinners. When you are done sell the online business for a large profit and buy more houses and more names. If you buy a house instead you'll just read about people like this...

    Domain name vs Real estate? Real Estate is only one Market to inveest your $ , and it comes with a stigma. Moreover the return on a cheap house deal today could yield nice profits however you may have to wait a decade to see the market correct enough to get it. So it is a very long term deal.
    Domain names are much better investments due to the fact you control which markets to participate in out of hundreds to choose from. Some of which are not suffering as bad and in some fields are even thriving. No contest! Domain names win.
