I’ll take 2 bean burritos, 2 beef tacos and an empanada with a diet coke because I’m watching my figure

May 1, 2008 by Rick Latona

I’ve done some bone-headed things in my time but this one might have taken the cake. Only time will tell.

Here’s the skinny. .Com.mx domains have never been popular, In fact, you could, even today, hand-register almost any name you wanted. Besides the fact that they are just cctld domains there is a risk that nic.mx will launch a pure mx extenion making the .com.mx extension worth even less. This happened with Japan when they launched .jp names on top of .co.jp names.

The thing is that I had inherited so to speek a couple of premium .com.mx names. When I bought Baja.com it came with Tijuana.com.mx and a bunch of other cities. Checking my AdSense account I noticed that these cities get pure type-in traffic and do 5-10 dollars a day. How bad could .com.mx names be?

My renewal fees on those names are 35 dollars per year. Registrations are 35 dollars per year. Well, in April, nic.mx had a special running. They were selling .com.mx names for only 6 dollars a year as long as you paid for at least 3 years in advance. I went a little loco. Here’s a sampling of what I registered during the sale which ended yesterday.

I focused initially on Spanish words but after looking at traffic reports I noticed that the English language names were getting typed in as well. I also went a little crazy with GEOs. After all, Mexicans travel as well and we certainly know they frequent U.S. localities.

Wow! I can’t believe you could take some many leaps in a day. Anyway Rick, risk like this is what make you thick. Once again, you have taken the “path less traveled” by most domainers. You are an inspiration, man. Like you said, time would tell (to see what you’d get on ROI). Big luck on this.

5-10 dollars a day!!!! WOW, Thanks for sharing such wonderful information.

By the way, Who developed tijuana.com.mx for you ?

  4. Rick Latona on May 1st, 2008 10:34 am

My team developed it. I’ll be putting 5 page mini-sites on every mx I registered throughout the April sale.

  5. robb on May 1st, 2008 10:48 am

Interesting strategy, would love to see a follow up in a few weeks on how the traffic is for these names. Good luck, spanish words on a spanish language extension doesn’t seem like a far stretch. Amazing that no one has tried this yet.

  6. Emil @KING.NET on May 1st, 2008 1:29 pm

I’ve invested to this extension as well, only one domain http://www.my.com.mx will be live soon. I’m just a small time domain investor.

    Regards,
    emil

my.com.mx is a nice name. mi.com.mx would be the Spanish translation, obviously. You could do a .mx reseller site on my.com.mx and have the site in English.

lol @ cameltoe.com.mx — will be looking forward to the development of that one ;)

  9. Rick Latona on May 2nd, 2008 3:23 am

I know they have deserts in Mexico. I guess I was thinking they had camels as well.

  10. DiggleNamer on May 2nd, 2008 8:21 am

Purely type-ins on Tijuana.com.mx? No SEO? Well if that is the case then surely this mini-site strategy will work well!

  11. Rick Latona on May 2nd, 2008 12:09 pm

Of course there is SE traffic as well.

  12. DiggleNamer on May 3rd, 2008 3:00 am

Thanks for the clarification. I will keep my eye on the mini-sites as I continue to study the industry.

  13. f-x on May 3rd, 2008 4:14 am

Well the type-in on Tijuana.com.mx is because Tijuana is a big city in Mexico… is a pretty cool GeoDomain. But I think not all domains have type in.

    Greetings from Mexico ;)

For an “almost zero” investment of just $6 for the first full year, it was a great idea.

A lot of folks are kicking themselves (ouch!) for not thinking of it themselves.

  15. Robbie on May 3rd, 2008 10:51 am

Whats the best place to register these domains?

    Who are you using rick?

    Still a great idea.

Hey Rick - This promotion you talk about has come around before. I picked up around 40 .com.mx top tier names last September for $30/5years each. I picked up another 30 during this April round for the same deal. If you look at the stats page at nic.mx, the .com.mx registrations chart has been bullish since inception (1992). However, “only time will tell” is right and the .mx threat appears to exist (although I feel the risk is becoming more and more analogous to .us vs. .com). What’s not correct is saying one can “even today, hand-register almost any name you wanted”. Most top tier names are gone (I’ve checked thousands, 100 at a time). Plus, considering the names you booked, I’m sure you checked many tier one names and found them unavailable. You also wrote .com.mx domains “have never been popular”. This is sort of like saying “dot COM domains have never been popular” in 1994! Only a small percentage of the population have access to the Internet. Plus, the standard $35 annual reg fee is unaffordable to most Mexicans. Hopefully in time if other registrars are allowed to compete with nic.mx, the rules don’t change to screw domain owners, and Mexico’s economy surges, our investments will pay off! I’m betting 60/40 in 5-7 years. Cool blog. Best, Michael

  17. Rick Latona on May 3rd, 2008 7:36 pm

    Robbie, go to nic.mx

Michael, great comments. I admit I am a rookie to them. I’ll certainly be looking for the next promotion to come around.

  19. Ron W. on May 4th, 2008 11:32 pm

    Rick,

Thanks for the valuable insight concerning the .com.mx extension…I did come up with one great name on my first attempt…Tijuana is a city with a large population (probably accounts for a large amount of the type-ins)…I have a few friends living there (my girlfriend’s mother lives there and an American friend of mine also lives there…since it’s next door to us here in San Diego). In fact, alot of Mexicans work over here and live over there (cost of living). This border town is the busiest Port of Entry in the world! You scored with TJ!

precisely the very same case with .co.uk , thanks , 2w

  21. Kerry on May 5th, 2008 7:48 pm

I had read about the sale at one of the forums. I should have pulled the trigger on a few names but was scared off at the prospect of nic.mx having a .mx landrush 6 months later.

Looking at the broader picture, having a few good spanish .com.mx for a few bucks reg fee and locked up for 3 years would have been smart.
