I Hope Dollars.com Sells for Millions!

April 14, 2008 by Rick Latona

A lot of people are emailing me about Sedo’s auction of Dollars.com that is going on right now. They ask because they know that I sold the name for 650,000 dollars just this past July.

Right now the auction is at 750,000 Euros with four days left in the auction.

I want it to sell for millions. I have no regrets as I did well when I sold it. Stephane and the folks at Virtual Network SA are also good people and they deserve to profit on the deal.

More importantly, Sedo’s auction of Pizza.com and this auction of Dollars.com are proof that the domain market can survive and thrive during a recession.

I still have tens of thousands of domains left. I’ll make far more money by the market continuing to rise than I ever could have made had I held on to Dollars.com for a bit longer.

Hey Rick, I like your philosophy of life. Even if you take big risks, you don’t seems to have any regrets unlike most businessmen. I think that is the reason why you are more sucessful than most people in this industry. All I can say is: “more grease to your elbow.” Ride on! you are the man. We’re all learning two or more things from your styles.

    Rick,
You are absolutely right. There is no better way to show liquidity and strength in a market than these kinds of sales. It is very much starting to look like a stock market! All eyes will be on every domain you sell in the future with everyone wondering if someone will sell it for more down the road.
Well, let’s hope so! It doesn’t do you, me or anyone else any good to just hang on to our domains till our last dying breath… What will we say to our family then? Well, If I had sold earlier everyone on my blog would be telling me I could have held out for more..
    More what?
You are living “More” everyday. That’s “more” important! I love your attitude!!!

    Hello Rick,

There is nothing that I hate more in the domaining industry that these domainers that sell nothing, even if they own a huge portfolio and loads of bad quality names, they keep them all!
    We need liquidity.
Rick generated a great benefice, probably Stéphane will do the same, …
This way we all make profits, acting at the inverse we are killing this industry.

This is an excellent sale Rick. We all hoping that Dollars.com reach a million, for the sake of everyone in domain industry.

    Cheers,

I appreciate Rick’s comment regarding Dollars.com. However, the sale is not done yet, reserve price is met but the money is not in the bank. It happends that some bidders are frequently not serious during auctions. Even if we don’t sell it, no regrets, it’s a great name and we belive in destiny. Rick had some good time with it and I am convinced it’s the beginning of a long story for Dollars.com. Best regards to everybody from Switzerland :-) Stephane Pictet

Sahar (above) has a legitimate point. But here is no doubt that auction like this is generating lot of enthusiasm and stimulation in this sector. The big players including Sahar and Rick would keep benefiting directly or indirectly from Sedo vims. Pizza.com’s auction was made headlines. Hypes or sales, domain-outsiders are getting the gist that serious dough could be made in the domain industry. I bet, angels and VCs would soon be lining up.

Sedo has informed us that the bidder at 750′000 euros was not a serious buyer. They have then decided to go back to 300′000 euros. We hope Dollars.com will go back in US hands, this is a great name with important potential.

  11. Stephane on April 15th, 2008 10:02 am

We are now back at 750′000 euros. The bidder was apparently serious. Very difficult to follow auctions at these levels. I prefer a real room where when can directly see people in the eyes, nobody is cheating.

  12. Stephane on April 15th, 2008 11:09 am

We have asked Sedo to withdraw the 750′000 euros bid. According to Sedo, the potential buyer is not reachable and has a recent account at Sedo. We would be unconfortable if someone is bidding above 750KE with a potential fake bid just under. So we are now back to 300′000 euros !

  13. E on April 15th, 2008 1:37 pm

What a bunch of crap. The bid is real…the bid is fake…back and forth. There are no consequences for someone faking a bid. Until there is, there will always be fake bids. People shouldn’t even talk about potential sales until the money has changed hands.

  14. Stephane on April 15th, 2008 2:30 pm

Yes, Sedo should be more cautious during important auctions. Money has to change of hands, you are perfectly right, that’s why I’ve tryed to calm Rick’s enthusiasm in my first post here. The auction is however not closed yet and I’ve a good feeling because it’s a huge name.

  15. SEYI on April 15th, 2008 3:58 pm

Nice of Stephane to give low-downs on this. I could imagine what kind of suspense you guys are going through. Sedo’s reputation is at stake here. I think they could do better than letting some bidders spin then around. If they could make it mandatory for domainers to get appraisal for names over 10K-mark, why can’t they make it a must to get highest bidders on phone when big money is on the line. The systems need to be overhauled, I must say.
