Do Not Try to Sell Me Your .Mobi Names

March 13, 2008 by Rick Latona

I have no interest in these names. I think the entire extension is ridiculous. They are worthless. I don’t care what other .mobi names have sold for either. I have zero faith in the extension and will not buy any .mobi names.
:) I do wish everyone luck that has one.

  5. Peter Askew on March 13th, 2008 6:13 pm

ahh..had to laugh with you here.. couldn’t agree more.. I had trivia.mobi, and was *very* happy to sell it off at Domainfest last Jan..

  6. Bob on March 13th, 2008 6:51 pm

I agree I purchased 4 mobi’s a while back for reg fees and would love to unload them.

I bid $50,000 on a prime dot mobi domain name last month…but somebody else out bid me…i am so soooo glad that i did not win…what the heck was i thinking…dot mobi has NO traffic…you are right Rick, dot mobi is worthless!!!

  8. Damir on March 14th, 2008 1:30 am

Rick your outlook on the .mobi is an interesting one.

But then it is okey since it is your outlook.

In some ways your outlook is understandable.

With out thought we create our world and decide what is justified and what not - this thought is what makes us human as we are as individuals great in our unique way.

  9. Michael on March 14th, 2008 2:16 am

Ditto on the dot mobi. I do have one that brings traffic, but in general I think they are a very risky investment.

  10. Bob on March 14th, 2008 3:23 am

I predict that most dot mobi buyers 99.99999% will be taking a bath soon. 99.99999% of domainers missed the dot-com boat and are grasping at any domain extension, hoping to make a quick buck. I am also guilty of registering .biz .cc .name .mobi what a waste of time and money.

  11. Frank on March 14th, 2008 12:49 pm

That’s the spirit, Rick — no way we’re gonna let these Mobi interlopers crash our party — haven’t these Mobi fanatics heard of iPhone — Dotcom is the king, baby -and let’s keep it that way!

  12. Nimesh on March 14th, 2008 2:29 pm

I think Rick is right. I have noticed some of the big guys like Facebook going mobile without dot mobi.

  13. .pH on March 14th, 2008 3:15 pm

Yeah, it is kind of like someone trying to register a silly name like RickLatona.com…as if everyone on the planet knew who that was.

I do wish everyone luck that has one.

I think Rick is right. I have noticed some of the big guys like Facebook going mobile without dot mobi.

Or perhaps the big guys who think so big of themselvese should go mobile?

    msevenmile.com

Done to mobile (.mobi) compliant standards. No tricksno browser manipulation, no auto detect.

And for those that think auto detection is the future of mobile internet? Have you actually tried using this crap?

  14. Fin on March 14th, 2008 8:55 pm

Yep. mobi is crap. Now what do you think of.tv?

  15. Emil @KING.NET on March 15th, 2008 1:11 pm

I have a couple of investment myself in .mobi but never got any traffic from those domains. Definitely will not renew these extension. What a waste of time and investment.

    Cheers,
    Emil

    FYI Rick

I’ve linked this specific article in my blog (http://emil.king.net) sharing your opinions and other visitors about investing in dot mobi extension. I hope you don’t mind.

    Cheers,
    Emil

Well I agree that in the long run .mobi will not be worth anything much, but everybody has to agree that right now lucky and smart flippers are making a fortune on good keywords and LLL.mobis. Those who buy now will regret later.
.tv on the other hand is a good choice, it has received great marketing…
btw I don’t own any .mobi or .tv, sticking with .com ;)

  18. Rick Latona Says .Mobi Is A Wasted Investment - Netpond on March 27th, 2008 2:34 pm

  19. Biz on March 27th, 2008 3:31 pm

I have made a nice little return from my .mobi investment and I will be keeping a small portfolio just in case. There are some major coporations out there using this extension and no matter how silly the extension may be, if that trend continues I don’t want to be left out.

  20. Gene on March 27th, 2008 5:10 pm

Your right .mobi isn’t an investment.

  21. James Barclay on March 27th, 2008 6:03 pm

    Well Rick,

You dont mince your words…..I just started a thread on .mobi in the .tv section of namepros saying that I just dont understand the high figure sales .mobi had pulled in . I have seen one , yes one commercial so far since its inception on TV - Quote.com finished off their ad on Bloomberg with a go to Quote .mobi for your mobile - thats it…..

I want your take on .TV - I own premium names such as EDUCATION.TV, geos such as THAILAND.TV - do you think .TV is a waste of space too? I see more and more tv ads every day using the extension as well as major websites investing in the .TV ext for their interactive videocentrric section

Rick, I want to thank you for buying ATL.mobi from me for $5000. I was also very glad to see you get $5500 within a month from it from the guy who tried to get it from me. I have sold another one, then some more got offers (I probably should have taken?), and still came out ahead in the mobis…

I still have tickers.mobi and usashop.mobi and shopusa.mobi if anyone wants them, please let me know!!!

  23. Marc Zwygart on March 28th, 2008 2:50 pm

Don’t be angry because you are too lazy to do anything other than park your domains. the ext. .mobi isn’t going to make you money by parking, you must develop and promote. there are many that would differ with you about traffic on .mobi.

  24. Mak Ossa on March 29th, 2008 5:59 pm

The whole idea about .mobi is nothing but hypes. I think some guys are too frustrated that most good names are gone and now waqnts to create any extensions out of any words. Why .mobi in the first place, it is long why not .mob. It is ridiculous to which extend some domainers would go to publicize useless extensions to make some bucks.

  25. Rick Latona on March 29th, 2008 10:07 pm

To answer some of your questions I believe hype is the only reason there have been big sales and they are going to tank in value sooner rather than later.

Zwygart, if you have to spend money to advertise it first it’s the money that you are spending that has value, not the domain.I could brand a reallyshitty.com name as well if I spend money to market it.

As for .tv names, I see them advertised all the time. I think these names have value and will continue to grow in value but I hate the way they do the pricing on them and as I’d only want the premiums I stay away because of the annual fees.

Traffic? http://mosh.nokia.mobi (actually not redirected) gets some 140 Million unique mobile vistors a month somewhere and was Nokia testbed for theiri mobile Advertising activities last year I had heard in contect with one of the domain auction events.
It’s all about creating a systematic approach to slicing your content properties and them: Cnsistingly sticking to it.

You lot should remember who the investors are in .mobi - google, mobile carriers, handset players ,Microsoft , Erricson - get the drift ? These guys all have a big interest in the mobile platform.

don’t write off dot mobi just try a bit of vision instead-

  31. George Ramos on January 26th, 2009 6:18 pm

Los dominios .mobi son muy importantes en plataformas móviles. El crecimiento de la publicidad móvil está aumentando a diario. Debe ser parte de su plan. El busqueda en el internet ha cambiado para mejorar El futuro de búsqueda .

Funny…I’m just a ‘part-time’ domainer, but i’ve made good money with dutch generic .mobis ..
No traffic on your parked .mobi ? True as hell. Developing is the key…

Iphone kills .mobi ? Well eeeh..ever scrolled horizontal and zoomed a large .com ? Owww..I hate it..
