I think I got carried away in my home office.
March 9, 2008 by Rick Latona
The Dell salesman had to tell me that I could hook up four monitors if I wanted to. He just HAD to tell me that. Actually, I can push a button on my universal remote to push whatever is on my fourth moniter to the LCD TV at the other end of the office so I guess technically, it would be five monitors.
Don’t get me wrong, though. It’s great. I’m not having any problems finding things to cover up the pixels with. Email on one, an inventory spreadsheet on another (minimized for the purpose of this post), browers on the third and IM messages on the fourth. No problem. I do feel more productive.

That does sound and look quite efficient.
Hey! Unminimize that screen!
I should try that sometimes, you know, watch penguins on TV while domaining like you…

Setting up 3 monitors was the best thing I’ve ever done. I have a fourth sitting around, but waiting to finally get up and buy a new desk so I can hook it up!
Great setup Rick!

I was looking for a 3 monitor solution myself and found this: http://go-l.com/home/index.htm Since then that’s what I dream
Earthian,
Those are great but I can’t figure out how to get it to stretch across all 4 monitors. It’s just duplicating. How do I do it?
Those are pretty cool Adrian.
some have done this by … right click on desktop >>> Active Desktop >>> Customize My Desktop >>> Background Tab >>> “Tile” on Picture Display menu
.
.
.
.
if this doesn’t work … right click on desktop >>> Active Desktop >>> New Desktop Item >>> Browse >>> choose the picture you want >>> click OK >>>
.
if your deskot items are unlocked (and there is a border around the picture >>> move the item by dragging it by the border and position it where you want it (you can also resize it by the edges) >>> right click on desktop again >>> Active Desktop >>> Lock Desktop Item (so that the border goes and the item doesn’t move
.
if your Desktop Items are locked >>> right click on desktop again >>> Active Desktop >>> click on Lock Desktop Items (to unlock them) >>> follow the steps right above
.
to delete a desktop item … right click on desktop >>> Active Desktop >>> Customize My Desktop >>> Web Tab >>> choose the one you want and press delete >>> OK or Apply
.
.
.
.
lastly , there is UltraMon (http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/) which does tons of stuff for multiple monitors rigs (costs about $40) … like putting a picture across many monitors … or Smart Taskbar (that adds additional taskbars to each monitor with only the applications that are on it)
Hey Rick,
Which Dell are you using to drive those four monitors? Do you have one video card or two cards? Just curious. Thanks.
Looking good Rick. Congrats!

I have two dual video cards. It’s a Dell Precision, loaded to the hilt.
Nice setup, a couple more and you got a Swordfish system…
Hmm, the 5th monitor might be over doing it, but 4 seems OK. I’ve only got 2 right now and that was a huge improvement - everyone needs at least two I think. Planning on a new PC later this year and I was thinking about a 3rd monitor. Tempting to go with 4, but 3’s enough. Oh, and I also use UltraMon. Highly recommended on multi-monitor systems.
