Fruity

February 11, 2008 by Rick Latona

Has anyone ever seen a fruit like oranges.com, lemons.com etc ever sell or be reported? I know the owner of apples.com and similar domains and he’d never sell.

We’ll, I just picked up plums.com. It’s not as big of a category but it is a category killer none-the-less.

Someone please correct me but am I the first to offer a name like this for sale?

Rick, congratulations on the new “branded” site. Read about it on ElliotsBlog.com and came over to see. I will be looking in and reading what you have to say and sell. BTW, we own Tangerine.com, Banana.com, Pear.com and Grape.com. In the early days of the web we went with the singular domains like apple.com. The plurals now are a good buy IMO.

I bought out Plum Software Services to get plums.com. What do you guys think names like these are worth?

The worth of Plums.com is a tough one. $40k maybe. If I was a farmer or a company that sold plums it would be worth far more. Bananas.com has a duel meaning for the fruit and someone who is bonkers. Chiquita or Dole would be smart to get that one. FYI, when I first registered domain names and placed email addresses on all of them with logos, Banana.com got far more worldwide email than any other name I had. The eyeballs were there, but how to qualify them was the question.

Well now, isn’t that just super…another domain blog…that already looks like it’ll be worth my time and interest…even with a color scheme reminiscent of past TV shows like The Mod Squad, The Partridge Family, and The Brady Bunch. :-)
Congrats, Rick…looking forward to what you’ll bring to the domain blog space.

    Really.

ps I’m with Michael as far as pitching plums.com to the “fruit big boys” . . . though I think they’d be willing to pay 100k+ for it.

“I know the owner of apples.com and similar domains and he’d never sell.”

Hmmm. Maybe he’s changed his tune, but I was contacted by a third party to reach out to some old friends at the Washington Apple Commission to gauge their interest in the name.

Nothing came of it, but I do recall the situation. Again, maybe it was an isolated thing.

BTW, love the new site. Saw the sales in Duke’s weekly report and headed over.

interesting, i pickuped up FruitDomains.com as a basket for domains just like those you mentioned. How long do you reckon it would take for the basket to become almost full?:)
